Getting the size right is the most important step. Here's how to measure the most common cushion shapes. Measure in inches. Not sure? Bring the old cushion or its cover to our shop.
THE BASICS
Three measurements
Almost every piece of foam comes down to three numbers. Write them in this order: thickness × width × length.
AThickness How tall the foam is.
BWidth Side to side, across the front.
CLength Front to back (also called depth).
COMMON SHAPES
Find your shape
Square or rectangle
Seat and back cushions, mattresses and bench pads.
AThickness
BWidth, side to side
CLength, front to back
T-cushion
Sofa and chair seats with “ears” that wrap around the front of the arms.
AWidth across the front (the widest part)
BWidth across the back
CDepth of the ears, from the front edge to where the T steps in
DTotal depth, front to back
Plus the thickness.
Round
Stools, bar seats and round chair pads.
ADiameter: straight across, through the center
Plus the thickness.
Wedge
Slanted back cushions and bed wedges.
AThickness at the tall end
BThickness at the short end
CLength
Plus the width, side to side.
Any other shape
Boat, RV and odd-shaped cushions are easiest with a paper template. For boats and patios, ask for our outdoor and marine-grade foam.
1Lay paper or cardboard on the seat and trace the outline.
2Mark which edge is the front.
3Write the thickness on it and bring it to the shop.
TIPS
Get it right the first time
Measure the cover, not the old foam. Old foam gets flattened and shrinks over time. Measure the cushion cover from seam to seam.
Replacing a missing cushion? Measure the space it fills: the seat or frame, side to side and front to back.
